Greenan Maze and farm: the labyrinth and farm you and your kids will love

Our review of the lovely Greenan Maze and Farm in Co Wicklow. Discover why this is one of our favourite places for a fun-filled family day out with the kids in the Dublin area.

Trips to local farms are our go-to activities to keep toddlers active and busy on a sunny day and, among the many within easy reach from our home in Dublin, Greenan Farm is probably the one we like most of all.

Located in Co Wicklow, the farm is only a short drive from Dublin, so it is easy to visit even if you only have a few hours available, and has several things to keep entertained kids of different ages and parents (and grandparents, it is a lovely place for a multigenerational day out!).

This is our review and why we recommend it as one of the best family days out near Dublin.

Where is Greenan Farm and Maze

Greenan Farm and Maze is in Co Wicklow, about an hour south of Dublin by car.

You can get there following the main road through Kilmacanoge and Bray and turn at Rathdrum, or you can take the more scenic road via the mountains and Glendalough.

The farm is well indicated and there is a good car park on arrival, only a short walk from the cafe and the main attractions.

The farm is open from April to the start of the winter and is usually open 10.00 am to 6.00 pm with the last admission at 5pm.

Booking for a standard visit is not necessary however, it is mandatory for special events such as the Easter Egg hunt happening in April, due to demand.

The place is super fun and people know it, book early!

You can find prices and how to book on the farm official site

Things to do for Kids at Greenan Farm and Maze

There is plenty to do at Greenan Farm.

Find your way through the maze

The most peculiar thing in Greenan Farm and the one that keeps us going over and over again is the Greenan Maze.

This is large maze with tall hedge walls and an overlook at the center and if you go in thinking it will be a breeze for you to get out and only a challenge for the kids… you will soon find yourself corrected!

Finding your way through the maze is now awfully difficult but sure takes a while, however, it is a lot of fun and we never felt we were forever lost in it, something that has happened to us in other mazes and can get pretty frustrating fast.

While the name of the places suggests there is one maze only here, in reality, there are two, one beside the other.

The biggest one is the hedge one I just described while the second one is a different type of maze, a Celtic one, with marks on the ground instead of tall hedges.

This second maze is a contemplative, more than an exciting place, although if you have a toddler, it quickly becomes a place to play too: our son spent countless afternoons just running around it like a mad thing!

Spot the fairy doors

Another really cute thing to do with small kids in Greenan Maze is spotting the little fairy doors that dot the road to and from the cafe.

The farm has lovely nature paths, easy for the whole family and crisscrossing lovely woodland, and on part of the are hidden fairy doors. This is a simple yet super charming way to entice little kids to keep walking: pretty sings with the name of plants and or animal spotting points make the walk varied and entertaining.

Say hi to the animals

A visit to Greenan Farm would not be complete without saying hi to the animals, always the most awaited bit of our visit.

Our two love the hens and geese there in particular but Greenan farm also has horses, sheep and super cute donkeys: the animals are close enough to the cage so you don’t have to worry about long muddy walks to get there

Greenan farm and maze are one of the most pleasant days out for families in Wicklow, Ireland. The farm has a lovely cafe, a fairy trail, a farm, a playground and of course a maze, not quite as easy to navigate as expected! Discover all you need to know to plan the perfect family day out at Greenan maze

Learn about the past in the farm museum

Greenan Farm has several buildings not turned museums and now bearing witness of life on farms in time passed.

They have three different areas or kids and adults to explore: the barn, which has farming tools that are pretty impressive for little kids especially, the old farmhouse museum, and the peculiar bottle house, which hosts you guessed it bottles!

Have a bite in the pretty cafe

No family day out would be complete without a bite and Greenan has a lovely cafe with snacks and meals for all.

The cafe is cute and colorful with nic rustic decor and a family-friendly vibe and serves sandwiches, soups and cakes. The cakes are delicious and the portions very big, perfect for sharing.

You can eat indoor or outdoor at one of the many picnic table available.

I hope you enjoyed this quick overview of Greenan Maze and Farm and convinced you to spend a day there with the kids. Happy family day out!
